According to DeWalt’s official FLEXVOLT system page, FLEXVOLT batteries are compatible with DeWalt 20V MAX tools. When inserted into a 20V MAX tool, the battery automatically switches to 20V output. When used in a 60V tool, it delivers 60V. This one-way backward compatibility is a key advantage of the FLEXVOLT system.

Charger Notes
FLEXVOLT batteries can be charged with DeWalt’s standard 20V MAX chargers as well as FLEXVOLT-specific chargers. Multi-port chargers (DCB104) can charge multiple batteries simultaneously. Always use a genuine DeWalt charger to protect battery cells and warranty.
DeWalt FLEXVOLT batteries (DCB606, DCB612) automatically switch between 20V MAX and 60V MAX depending on the tool they’re inserted into. This means every FLEXVOLT battery is fully backwards-compatible with all 20V MAX tools. FLEXVOLT-specific tools run at 60V for maximum power. There is also an 80V MAX configuration using two 40V adapters in select tools.
