Ryobi’s 40V platform is designed for outdoor power equipment — mowers, chainsaws, blowers, trimmers, and snow blowers. With over 85 tools in the system, it’s one of the largest cordless outdoor ranges available. The 40V line is exclusive to The Home Depot in the US and sits alongside (but is separate from) the Ryobi ONE+ 18V system.
TL;DR
Ryobi 40V batteries power 85+ outdoor tools — mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, snow blowers, and more.
40V and 40V HP batteries are cross-compatible — any 40V battery works in any 40V tool.
40V HP (High Performance) batteries deliver extra power and runtime in HP-designated tools, but also work in standard 40V tools.
Important: Ryobi changed the physical shape of some newer 40V batteries. Certain taller batteries (6 Ah and above) may not fit in older tools with moulded battery compartments.
40V batteries are not compatible with Ryobi ONE+ 18V tools — completely different platforms.
Exclusively sold at The Home Depot (US).
Compatibility Rules
Ryobi states that any 40V lithium-ion battery can power any tool in the 40V platform. This includes both standard 40V and 40V HP batteries — they share the same slide-on connector. HP batteries simply deliver higher sustained power output, which HP-branded tools are engineered to take advantage of.
The battery shape issue: In recent years, Ryobi redesigned the casing on some 40V batteries (particularly 6 Ah and larger units). These newer batteries are taller (approximately 4.5 inches) and may not physically fit into older 40V tools that have a moulded battery compartment enclosing the top of the battery. If you own older 40V tools, check the battery dimensions before buying a newer high-capacity pack. Lower-capacity batteries (2 Ah, 4 Ah) in the current design generally still fit older tools.

No. Ryobi 40V and ONE+ 18V are completely separate platforms with different physical connections and voltages. They are not interchangeable in any direction. Each requires its own dedicated batteries and chargers.
Is Ryobi 40V good for lawn care?
Yes. Ryobi 40V is specifically designed for outdoor power equipment — lawn mowers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, string trimmers, and snow blowers. The 40V platform provides the sustained power output needed for yardwork tasks that often exceed what 18V can comfortably deliver.
Which Ryobi 40V battery should I get for a lawn mower?
A 6.0Ah battery is the minimum for push mowers, providing approximately 40 minutes of mowing. For larger yards, the 7.5Ah or the new 40V HP 6.0Ah batteries are recommended. Having two batteries lets you mow a full-size yard without waiting for a recharge.
