Ryobi’s cordless outdoor range is sold as 40V in North America and as 36V MAX POWER in the UK and Europe. Ryobi 40V vs 36V MAX POWER — the UK position

In North America, Ryobi sells the RYOBI 40V System for outdoor power equipment, with battery part numbers using an OP- prefix (for example OP4050A and OP4040A1). In the UK and Europe the equivalent outdoor platform is 36V MAX POWER, with battery part numbers using an RY36B prefix.
We do not claim the two are cross-compatible. Ryobi publishes no statement in either direction, the platforms use different part-number schemes, and neither is sold in the other’s market. Compatibility Rules
- Any 36V MAX POWER battery works in any 36V MAX POWER tool. A 2.0Ah pack will run a 50cm chainsaw; it will simply run it for less time.
- Higher Ah means longer runtime, not more power. Voltage determines power delivery; amp-hours determine how long it lasts.
- Heavier tools benefit from High Energy packs. Mowers, brushcutters and 50cm chainsaws draw hard, and the 6.0Ah, 8.0Ah and 12.0Ah packs are built for sustained draw.
- All 36V MAX POWER chargers charge all 36V MAX POWER packs. Charge time scales with pack size and charger rating.
What It Is NOT Compatible With
Ryobi UK is explicit on this point: “You cannot use 36V batteries in 18V tools or interchange chargers between different voltage ranges.”
