Are Jigsaw Blades Universal?
This is one of the most common questions people ask when buying jigsaw blades for the first time. The answer is mostly yes — but with one critical caveat. Within the same shank type, jigsaw blades are universal across all brands. A Bosch T-shank blade will fit a Makita, DeWalt, or Milwaukee jigsaw. But there are two shank types (T-shank and U-shank), and they are completely incompatible with each other.
Short Answer
Yes — if you have a T-shank jigsaw (which almost all modern jigsaws are), then any T-shank blade from any brand will fit. Bosch, Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee, Festool, Hikoki — all T-shank blades are interchangeable. The only exception is if you have an older U-shank jigsaw, which requires U-shank blades.
Why Jigsaw Blades Are (Mostly) Universal
Unlike multi-tool blades (which have at least 5 incompatible attachment systems), jigsaw blades have standardised around just one system: T-shank. Invented by Bosch in the 1990s, T-shank became so popular that every major power tool brand adopted it. Today, there is no brand-specific jigsaw blade system — the T-shank standard is shared by everyone.
This means when you walk into a tool shop and pick up a pack of T-shank jigsaw blades, you can be confident they’ll fit your jigsaw regardless of what brand it is — as long as it’s a T-shank model (which it almost certainly is if it was made in the last 20 years).
The One Exception: U-Shank
The only scenario where jigsaw blades are NOT universal is if you have an older U-shank (also called bayonet or universal shank — confusingly) jigsaw. U-shank blades have a U-shaped notch at the bottom and are held in place by a set screw. They are not compatible with T-shank jigsaws, and T-shank blades won’t fit U-shank jigsaws either.
How to check: If your jigsaw has a tool-free quick-release lever or button for blade changes, it’s T-shank. If it uses a set screw (requiring an Allen key), it’s likely U-shank. When in doubt, remove your current blade and look at the shank shape.
What About Blade Length and Width?
While the shank is universal, the blade body itself varies significantly. Jigsaw blades come in different lengths (50mm to 150mm+), widths, tooth counts (TPI), and materials. These differences affect cutting performance but NOT compatibility — a long blade fits the same jigsaw as a short blade. Choose the right blade for your material and cut type, not for your jigsaw brand.
