What Battery Does the Makita DHP486 Use?
The Makita DHP486 runs on the Makita 18V LXT battery platform. Any genuine Makita 18V LXT slide-on battery fits and powers this brushless combi drill — from the compact BL1815N (1.5Ah) up to the high-capacity BL1860B (6.0Ah). There is no star-terminal restriction on the DHP486, so both older and newer LXT packs work.
The DHP486 is not compatible with Makita 40V max XGT or 12V max CXT batteries — those use a different mount and voltage. It accepts 18V LXT packs only.
Compatible Makita 18V LXT Batteries
- BL1815N — 1.5Ah (lightest; best for overhead work)
- BL1820B — 2.0Ah
- BL1830B — 3.0Ah (good all-round balance)
- BL1840B — 4.0Ah
- BL1850B — 5.0Ah (recommended for most users)
- BL1860B — 6.0Ah (maximum runtime)
Which Battery Should You Choose?
For most users the BL1850B (5.0Ah) is the sweet spot — a full day of drilling and driving without much added weight. For overhead or repetitive work, the lighter BL1830B (3.0Ah) reduces fatigue while still handling the DHP486’s ~130 Nm output. Choose the 6.0Ah BL1860B only if you regularly bore large-diameter holes or use hammer mode for extended periods.
Charging Notes
Every compatible LXT pack charges on any Makita 18V LXT charger, such as the DC18RC (rapid) or DC18RD (dual-port). A 5.0Ah BL1850B reaches full charge in roughly 45 minutes on the DC18RC.
Battery sizing, runtime & troubleshooting
Recommended pack: A heavy-duty combi — a 5.0Ah for masonry; a compact pack is fine for screwdriving.
Compatibility caveats: Brushless motor. 0–2,100 rpm, 125Nm max torque, 16mm masonry capacity.
If it won’t start or cuts out: Bogging in masonry means the pack is too small — fit a 5.0Ah.
Runtime: No per-charge figure published.
Versus the adjacent model: In hammer/masonry work it wants a 5.0Ah, where the impact driver is content on a compact.
