What Battery Does the Makita DTM51 Use?
The Makita DTM51 runs on the Makita 18V LXT battery platform. Any genuine Makita 18V LXT slide-on battery fits and powers this oscillating multi-tool — from the compact BL1815N (1.5Ah) up to the high-capacity BL1860B (6.0Ah). There is no star-terminal restriction, so both older and newer LXT packs work.
The DTM51 is not compatible with Makita 40V max XGT or 12V max CXT batteries — those use a different mount and voltage. It accepts 18V LXT packs only.
Compatible Makita 18V LXT Batteries
- BL1815N — 1.5Ah (lightest)
- BL1820B — 2.0Ah
- BL1830B — 3.0Ah (recommended all-round)
- BL1840B — 4.0Ah
- BL1850B — 5.0Ah (longer sessions)
- BL1860B — 6.0Ah (maximum runtime)
Which Battery Should You Choose?
A multi-tool draws less current than a drill or saw, so you don’t need the biggest pack. The BL1830B (3.0Ah) is the best balance of runtime and weight for detail sanding and cutting. Step up to the BL1850B (5.0Ah) if you run the DTM51 continuously — for example, long sanding or flush-cutting sessions — and prefer fewer battery swaps. The 1.5Ah BL1815N keeps the tool lightest for overhead or awkward-angle work.
Charging Notes
All compatible LXT packs charge on any Makita 18V LXT charger, such as the DC18RC (rapid) or DC18RD (dual-port). A 3.0Ah BL1830B reaches full charge in roughly 22 minutes on the DC18RC.
Battery sizing, runtime & troubleshooting
Recommended pack: Lower draw — any LXT pack works; a 3.0–5.0Ah for longer runtime.
Compatibility caveats: 6,000–20,000 opm variable speed.
If it won’t start or cuts out: A flat or unseated pack is the usual non-start cause.
Runtime: No per-charge figure published.
Versus the adjacent model: A light-draw tool — a good home for your smaller LXT packs while the saws take the 5.0Ah.
