Recommended Battery
For the 2853-20, the 48-11-1850 (5.0Ah) offers the best balance of runtime and weight. Impact drivers are used frequently throughout the day, so a larger battery means fewer swaps. For lighter tasks or overhead work where weight matters, a 48-11-1820 (2.0Ah) compact pack keeps the tool nimble.
Minimum Battery
The 48-11-1815 (1.5Ah) compact battery will run the 2853-20 and keeps the overall tool weight very low — ideal for quick tasks or when carrying the tool on a belt. However, expect to swap batteries frequently on busy days.
Battery Compatibility Notes
- All M18 REDLITHIUM batteries are backwards and forwards compatible with every M18 tool
- Compact batteries (1.5Ah–3.0Ah) are ideal for keeping the impact driver light for overhead and tight-space work
- M18 batteries are NOT compatible with M12 tools or older V18 tools
- The four-mode DRIVE CONTROL works with any M18 battery — no special battery required

Battery sizing, runtime & troubleshooting
Recommended pack: Works happily on a compact 2.0Ah for light or overhead work; a 4.0/5.0Ah gives all-day runtime. No high-output pack is needed.
Compatibility caveats: Fits all M18; this model is discontinued, replaced by the 2953-20.
If it won’t start or cuts out: A flat or unseated pack is the usual non-start cause; the driver itself rarely trips a healthy pack.
Runtime: No official figure; expect roughly double the fasteners on a 5.0Ah versus a 2.5Ah pack.
Versus the adjacent model: The light-draw counterpart to the 2767-20 high-torque wrench — this one is where your compact packs belong.
